Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized it was not the right location for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Alongside her usual performances in the theatre, Tate also joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
